What a great record the new Watching Tides is - crazy intense, playfully so on the point that it is almost not to believe that here is a trio at work. But from the beginning: I had swapped the first 12" of the three with a friend a year ago and perceived it as extremely refreshing - admittedly, my last "emo" excursions were more than a decade ago now, so Watching Tides got my unsaturated genre attention. I listened to a fair amount of Midwest stuff in the late '90s: the emphasis here, however, was on the early, edgier stuff - Crank, Caulfield & Co. Watching Tides are more reminiscent of the 2000s wave of US emos. There are atmospheric guitars like on younger Pianos Become The Teeth, with a much edgier sound - technically not too far from Casket Lottery's Moving Mountains. But you can still find reminiscences of the emo wave of recent grunge/emo history - the melodic vocal parts are something for fans of Tigers Jaw and Basement (but nowhere near as cheesy as the latter). And as if that wasn't enough name-dropping, imagine all that paired with punkier parts that go more in the direction of Title Fight or Touché Amoré.
Lyrically, it's about a reckoning with the home, with old friendships and all the junk that you carry around from the past. (This charming man)
